On Saturday 6th Februart JamKit – The Jamaican Kittitian Association (St. Kitts) celebrated the anniversary of the birthday of the King of Reggae, the Honourable Robert Nesta Marley and that of the Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Brown. The tribute took the form of song and spoken word to honour the works and legacies of both these International Reggae Icons. See photos below.
On the evening of Bob Marley’s birthday February 6, 2010, KitJam (the Kittitian Jamaican Association) orchestrated a night of spoken word and song in remembrance of not only the late Robert Nesta Marley but also the late Dennis Brown who would have celebrated on February 1. The night was filled with tributes to the lives and work of these two men who influenced and shaped music, not only in Jamaica but the rest of the world.
Although getting off to a slow start, some of St. Kitts’ biggest talents gathered, most assuming dual roles as they filled the audience as well. This made for ease with the transitioning of acts and somehow seemed like a session of show and tell. The love and appreciation everyone felt for the two Jamaican born artists seemed to enhanced the level of performances by the local talents as they exuded passion and charisma, yet assuming a humbling sense of pride to be amongst their peers for such an occasion.
The incorporation of trivia and amazing prizes including two cell phones kept the crowd on their toes and highly interactive as they recalled intimate facts about both Bob Marley and Dennis Brown, facts only to be known by true fans. This consumed lots of time as it sent the night well into it’s fourth hour in duration, but many of the audience members did not seem to mind.
KitJam may have originally planned a tribute to two great Jamaican musical talents but in the end they highlighted our own local talent. They created a night that demanded passion, positivity and a remembrance of past accomplishments that would forever impact our present struggles.
