ISLAND XPRESSIONS

Project Poetry 2010… The coupling of great performances from the young poets the guest artists event was undeniably a success. Performers include Nicha-B, Desi Brown, Dameon Lawerence, Patrick Walters, Stephane Vincent and Ricki and Stephen LOV Smith. Last but not least there was a fashion show by featuring the models of S Model Management.

Nicha B | Debut Peformance

Up and coming local artist Nicha “Born Agen” Byron made his debut performance singing two of his original songs ‘Memories’ & ‘School Time Lover.’

This Time | Makeila

The show stopper of the night was Mimi who did a rendition of John Legend’s “This Time.” Her performance was so passionate that it gave many persons chills and commanded a standing ovation. The show could have very well ended there and we would have gone home happy. Click here for video…

Untitled Piece | Ervin “Mr. Positively Inclined”

Ervin ‘Mr. Positively Inclined’ Welsh the official photographer of the night, stepped from behind the camera to favor us with an untitled love piece. Who ever this poem was written for is one lucky young lady! He delivered to a silent and attentive crowd that came alive with applause at the end of his delivery. Click here for video…

She Left Me at the Altar | Ricki

Another Island Xpressions regular Ricki ‘Jubliee John’ Richardson performed a comedic piece of the night where he introduced his character as his cousin – a jilted groom ‘Calamit-E-Joe’ from Alabama. Ricki, or should I say Calamit-E-Joe sang about being left at the altar by his fiancé Teshari for another individual Samal. This was a refreshing change from the other serious pieces of the night. Alice | L.O.V.

Never a disappointment, Island Xpressions regular and ladies favorite L.O.V took to the stage with a piece entitled “Alice.” This reminded me of Queen Ifrica’s song ‘Daddy,’ as it spoke on the same issue of molestation. The Haitian Experience | Stéphane

To get the night started, first time performer Stéphane did a tribute to Haiti entitled “The Haitian Experience.” As a survivor of the devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake, he recalled his experience of this catastrophic event that left thousands dead, thousands injured and millions homeless. Several persons have done pieces about Haiti at previous shows but it was interesting to get a first hand account of the destruction and pain that continues to plague our Haitian brothers and sisters. Why Men Lie | Dawson

Toward the end of this night spirits were high and everyone was having a good time but Dawson decided to ensure that all the ladies were fed mentally, just as much as they were entertainment-wise. His piece called “Why Men Lie…” need I say more? Brought a sudden quiet attentiveness to the venue as all the women reached for a pen and pad to take notes as he explained his take on the age old mystery. Click here for video…

Local Entertainer Kervin ‘Infamus’ Benjamin took to the stage favoring us with a song, which he felt inspired to sing after looking at the atmosphere at Xpress Yourself.
